The Red Ripe Strawberry

I love themed cakes!! This was for my son's fourth birthday, the party was based on his favorite children's book "The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and The Big Hungry Bear."

  1. Love this! I'm interested in doing something similar for my niece's birthday later this month. Do you have any suggestions...or a basic step by step for the strawberry? The mouse is fondant, I'm guessing. But that strawberry I'm just not sure about! And the dirt...that's cake crumbs? Just looking for a little something to get me started in the right direction. Thanks!

    1. Yes, the mouse is fondant. The cake is covered in fondant as well. It is impossible to make your fondant that red, so I actually covered it in white fondant and then painted it with a sponge brush and red food coloring mixed with almond extract (using an alcohol based extract will make the cake shiny, don't use water it will eat away at the fondant). The dirt is crushed up oreos, if you use a blender or food processor to crush them, all of the white cream disappears. Let me know if you have any other question, I am happy to help!

  2. Oh, that's so helpful! I was worried about how to get that color and texture on the strawberry. You did a fab job and I thank you for your willingness to help!

  3. Oh my gosh; LOVE this! My son is turning one and this is his favorite book. I would love to do a cake like this for his first birthday party. How did you get the strawberry shape? I’ve googled giant 3D strawberry mold and can’t seem to find anything. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
